DEATH
DEFYING CASE HISTORY 26 .....
As
Managing Director of his own mining construction equipment company, Adrian
Donald requires his salespeople to undertake travelling in remote areas.
One of these 4WD vehicles was travelling from Kangaroo Island to Adelaide
when the driver lost control while negotiating a left hand curve in wet
conditions, at a speed of 90 kph. The vehicle spun, hit the verge of the
road and tipped over, striking a rock embankment which crushed the roof,
rear doors and left side. On board the vehicle was a large tool box and
spare parts box with a combined weight of over 50 kg, plus water containers
and other equipment. The driver survived without serious injury, but the
vehicle was a write off. A Milford Cargo Barrier that had been fitted
to the vehicle not only restrained the potentially lethal cargo, but appeared
to have also supported the rear door pillar which did not collapse to
the degree of the forward pillar.
Adrian says "I have no doubt in my mind the driver walked away
from this accident without serious injury due to the strength of the Milford
Cargo Barrier. Prior to this accident I had not given much thought to
the dangers of unrestrained objects .... I now believe the fitting of
your barriers should be compulsory on all similar vehicles."
